Actor Greg Vaughan can’t say he was surprised when “Days of Our Lives” execs informed him they were not renewing his contract after three years.
However, he did get a 13-week extension and during that time performed what he believes is some of the best work of his career after a drunk Eric got behind the wheel on New Year’s Eve and caused Daniel’s death.
“It was honestly the best work I’ve done because it was the most I’ve been written for in a long tome,” Vaughan told the April 18 issue of Soap Opera Digest. “In hard times, you’ve got to make difficult choices and it really affected us in a lot of ways.”
Next week, that fateful and fatal New Year’s Eve accident ends Vaughan’s story and days with DAYS as Eric is sentenced to five years in prison for vehicular manslaughter. The actor admits, taping his last scenes were extremely difficult.
“When Eric leaves the canvas I have an eight-minute scene and I re-wrote some of it…It was the greatest scene I have had. It was me, Deidre Hall, Josh Taylor, and Drake Hogestyn,” Vaughan told Digest. “Everyone [was] in a huddle and I was just saying thank you…It totally changed the dynamic of everything and the whole moment. Those final eight minutes on camera were so great to me, and that’s the way I wanted to leave it. There wasn’t a dry eye on the set.”
