Last fall, “Days of Our Lives” had us on the edge of our seats almost daily. From Ben’s killing to spree to Bo’s quest to get home, we couldn’t wait to see what happened next. When Abby spent nearly a month in the same clothes shackled to a chair in what Soap Shows called The Dark Cabin, we knew it couldn’t end well.
When Abby spent nearly a month in the same clothes shackled to a chair in what Soap Shows called The Dark Cabin, we knew it couldn’t end well.
Yes, Abby (Kate Mansi) and Chad (Billy Flynn) escaped that burning bed, Ben (Robert Scott Wilson) was apprehended, they learned Chad fathered Thomas after all, and then they wed–but we always knew Ben would be back (mainly from hints dropped on social media by Ben himself–actor Robert Scott Wilson).
We also knew Abby would be gone by late spring, but didn’t know how. Now we think we do in a grand justice storyline showcasing Kate Mansi’s best acting in five years. Could anyone turn away from the screen Friday as Abby turned the tables on Ben–or should we say the bed?
As Abby tied Ben’s legs as she casually asked Chad to bring home some cookies, we knew she was headed somewhere else. When Ben asked Abby if she planned to kill him, she calmly said “Yes”. We knew she’d reached her destination. Could Abby kill another human being? Not in her mind. But, if she told herself this man was a monster and not a human (and he gave her an awful lot of evidence last fall that monster is his proper category), then of course she could set that bed aflame and watch him burn, baby, burn.
“Days of Our Lives” did not disappoint one bit with the second arc to this chilling story–music and all. There was no way Abby could survive what she did with her sanity in tact, and clearly, she didn’t. In her mind, payback is fair play, but in our minds we’re losing a beloved actress and character in a gripping and poetic way.
