Something different happened this week when Days of Our Lives got a new co-head writer. An experienced lower member of the writing team got a promotion–and get this–he’s never been a head writer before. That could be the best news ever.
Soaps are notorious for recycling head writers who move from soap to soap and then recycle plots from previous soaps from their bag of tricks. It’s been ages since a show has found a new head-writer who is just that–new.
Ryan Quan may be new to head writing, but he is not new to soaps. He started his soap career as a member of Procter and Gamble’s writing workshop and contest for college students in the late 90s and from 1999-2005, he worked as writing assistant for NBC’s Passions.
He took the same job in 2007 at Days of Our Lives and from 2008-2011, he wrote 50 scripts. He has also been a breakdown writer and a member of the show’s Emmy-winning writing team in 2012.
This resume certainly qualifies him for a head writing post and we can’t wait to see what fresh, new stories he pens for the 50-year-old soap. We were also excited to see what Josh Griffith and Dena Higley could do when their material began airing last September.
